While watching a TV newscast, Jarod realizes that one of the simulations he developed for The Centre was used by someone in order to abduct Emma Barrett, the state's key witness in the trial of Sammy Tanaka, a boss in the Yakuza crime family. Determined to rescue Emma by finding a way around his own simulation, Jarod "Darrow" becomes a Department of Justice officer.
Intending to kill a Vietnamese drug dealer who double-crossed him, Sammy Tanaka killed Emma Barrett's son, Max, in front of a pet shore. Jarod learns that Emma is the only person who actually saw Tanaka pull the trigger and is, therefore, the only one who can put him behind bars.
On his first attempt to get Emma back, Jarod arrives too late, but in time to see her being shoved into a van. He recognizes one of her abducters as a Centre sweeper. Realizing that Emma is running out of time, Jarod appeals to both Sydney and Broots for inside help to find where the Centre is keeping Emma.
Lyle engineered Emma's abduction on behalf of The Centre, and plans to sell Emma to Sammy Tanaka's oldest son, Tommy, for $10,000,000. Mr. Parker and Mr. Raines think that they have finally found a way to be rid of Lyle. They plot to have Miss Parker transfer the money into a secret Centre account, so that the Triumvirate will eliminate Mr. Lyle, both for dealing with the Yakuza and for making such a costly error. If the Triumvirate doesn't act, the Yakuza will, once they believe that Mr. Lyle has stolen their money. Jarod is one step ahead of everyone, arranging to have the money rerouted a second time, out of Mr. Raines account and into one of his own.
When Jarod manages to rescue Emma, just moments before Lyle turns her over to Tanaka, he learns from her that Special Agent Russell Gillson, one of the men assigned to protect her, never pulled his weapon to defend her during the kidnapping. Jarod distinctly remembers Gillson saying in his statement that he had fired his weapon and realizes that the agent has been bought off.
On the day of the trial Jarod uses a smoke and mirrors imitation of the same kind of diversions that the original simulation used to divert the attention of the guards, evades the Centre team that Miss Parker has in front of the courthouse, and gets Emma into the courtroom to testify.
Afterwards, Agent Gillson confesses to his involvement and is arrested. Mr. Parker and Mr. Raines find that their secret Centre account is empty, and Mr. Lyle is followed by two Yakuza hitmen.
Jarod calls Sydney and thanks him for his help and tells him that he hopes he will enjoy the little "gift" that he sent. It was Sydney who rerouted the money out of Raines account for Jarod, freeing him up to rescue Emma.
Miss Parker confronts her father about Centre dealings with the Yakuza crime syndicate. Mr. Parker lays the blame for the change in Centre policy at the feet of Mr. Lyle. Broots gains legal custody of his daughter, Debbie, in part because Jarod gave the judge information proving that Broots' ex-wife was using Debbie's child support money to feed her gambling habit.
