While waiting for a bus in Oakland, California, Jarod meets Dan Healy, a hazardous materials (Hazmat) management specialist. He talks to Jarod about the importance of family, then, without warning, stands up and walks in front of the first express bus that is passing by. The bus hits him, but Jarod keeps him alive until the paramedics arrive. Dan keeps repeating to Jarod that he "let them all down," meaning his family and his friends.

Jarod takes Dan's briefcase from the scene. At his lair, he watches an old sim relating to suicides. Sydney tells the young Jarod that suicide isn't just an action, it's a cry for help. Going through Dan's briefcase, Jarod decides to answer that cry and to help Dan Healy.

Jarod "Dupont" goes to work at Environmental Containment Systems as a Hazmat management specialist, to find out what really happened when a container seal that was developed and tested by Dan Healy failed -- causing the death of three of his co-workers when MZT, a deadly pesticide, leaked from a container that they were shipping.

When Jarod tests Healy's seal and finds that it holds up perfectly when in contact with MZT, he goes through the shipping and storage records. All of the paper work is signed by the same person -- Horace Strickland. Looking for a connection between the workers who died in the "accident" and Strickland, Jarod finds that Larry Meyers was wanted by the FBI for extortion and that there are matching withdrawals and deposits from Strickland's bank account to Meyers bank account. Strickland had already been convicted of felony drug smuggling once before -- Jarod deduces that he was using the Hazmat containers to smuggle heroin and Meyers was blackmailing him. The MZT "accident" was Strickland's way of getting out from under Meyers' monetary demands. The other two workers were collateral damage.

Jarod addresses a manila envelope to Erin Hunsaker, the head of the Hazmat team, and calls Strickland about a fictional shipment that needs to go right out away. When Strickland arrives, Jarod pushes him into an empty container and closes it. Strickland, thinking the container is going to be filled with MZT, confesses. When Jarod releases him, Strickland realizes that the container was only filled with what he earlier told Jarod was "the food of the Gods," Twinkie filling.

Sydney sees a man that The Centre identifies as Martin Zeller, walking through the hallway. In fact, the man is Werner Kreig, the man responsible for killing Sydney's parents, Jean-Michael and Greta, at Dachau -- then taking Sydney and Jacob for the purpose of performing tests on them, because they were twins. Sydney surprises Kreig at home, planning to kill him, but finds that he cannot do it. Sydney wonders how much difference there really is between what Kreig did to him and what he did to Jarod. Miss Parker is there for Sydney during his moment of truth and afterwards, makes sure that Kreig is extradited to Israel.

Jarod discovers Twinkies and the song, 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.
