Jarod infiltrates the Drug Enforcement Administration as Agent "Leary", a psychological reconstructionist, in order to help five-year-old Nicky. The child hasn't spoken since he went out into an alley behind a laundromat, looking for his cat, and saw DEA Agent Antonio Cruz get murdered.
The DEA needs Nicky's testimony in order to put drug lord Emilio Vasquez in jail, but the boy was badly traumatized when Cruz' dead body literally fell on top of him. Cruz' murder has been painted as that of a corrupt agent getting killed in a drug deal gone bad. Only Nicky knows the truth, and he isn't talking.
As safe house after safe house ends up getting used for target practice by a team of hit men sent by Vasquez, Jarod tries to reach Nicky in every way that he can - to help him put his memories back together. Nicky favorite toy is a figurine of a nurse, like his mother, except it's in two pieces. Its head has been broken off. Jarod makes a small breakthrough when he glues the head back on for Nicky. Later, when Jarod searches the alley and finds the little plastic cap that belongs on the nurse's head, Nicky tells him that he saw Bingham and Vasquez exchange briefcases. When Agent Cruz showed up, Vasquez drove away. It was Bingham who shot Cruz. Bingham later returned with the police and told Nicky that if he ever told anyone what he saw, "this" will happen to your mother - and Bingham broke off the toy nurses head.
The third safe house is part of a large estate that was built by a paranoid homeowner - over a series of tunnels leading in and out of the house. Jarod makes use of one of them to save Nicky and his mother, Karla, from getting blown up in a transport van that Bingham promised Vasquez "primo" heroin if he rigs. Afterwards, Bingham says that he's going to take a drive around the perimeter, but in fact goes to meet Vasquez to give him his "payoff" for getting rid of Nicky.
Jarod shows up at the meeting place and makes Bingham believe that the next car that is coming down the alley is Vasquez, expecting his heroin. Then he shows Bingham that he has switched his heroin for chocolate milk powder. Jarod tells Bingham that if he'll just admit to killing Cruz, he'll give him back the real heroin, before Vasquez arrives and kills him for not having the payment he was promised. Bingham admits to killing Cruz, and then finds out that the car that arrived is full of DEA agents, all of whom know that he was the one who killed Cruz.
Mr. Raines is attacked in The Centre parking lot by an unknown assailant with a straight razor who carved the number "155" into Raines' arm. Miss Parker believes that Raines knows who attacked him. She and her team follow Willie, who was sent by Raines to burn down a warehouse. Miss Parker, Sydney and Broots put the fire out and discover that "Einnad 155" has been painted all over the walls inside the warehouse. In the medicine cabinet, there are bottles of prescription drugs for "D. H. Minor" and the prescribing doctor was Raines. When he closes the medicine cabinet, Broots and Sydney see in the mirror that "Einnad" is actually "Dannie" spelled backwards. Dannie was one of Raines' projects at The Centre, in room 155 on SL-27 before it burned. He's been continuing his work on Dannie at the Davidson Psychiatric Hospital ever since.
Miss Parker realizes that Dannie is hiding behind one of the walls and breaks through. Dannie slices Miss Parker's hand with a razor, but when she points her gun at him, he begs her to kill him, saying, "Please! Make him stop! Kill me and he'll stop!"
Miss Parker tells the Tower about Raines' "extra curricular" activities and Sydney gets the hospital to transfer Dannie, making him Sydney's patient.
Jarod discovers chocolate milk.
