Jarod allows himself to be institutionalized at The Pleasant Wood Institute in order to find out the truth about what happened to one of their patients, Erica Michaels, who was presumed to have escaped but hasn't been seen or heard from since.

Her doctor, Randall Blythe, acted improperly during Erica's therapy sessions, she became pregnant and Blythe killed her in order to save his career. Unable to murder the only witness to his crime, Erica's best friend, Mary, Blythe begins prescribing hallucinogens for her on a regular basis. Under the influence of the medication, Mary believes herself crazy and doesn't even try to tell anyone the story of what happened to Erica. Jarod befriends Mary and convinces her to stop taking her medication. When Jarod finds Erica's body, he first gives Blythe a taste of his own medicine, then makes certain that the police have the evidence they need to send Blythe to jail.

Everyone who was on SL-27 at the time of the explosion survived except Gar, a sweeper. Jarod managed to get away completely uninjured. Mr. Parker and Broots suffered only minor injuries, but Sydney is blind.

Mr. Raines holds Sydney in the Renewal Wing for over a week, until Mr. Lyle is brought back to The Centre. Lyle frees Sydney from Raines' grasp, but Miss Parker is certain that Sydney had to "sell his soul to the devil" in order to get Lyle to allow him to come back to work on the Jarod Project.

Once again, Mr. Parker lies to his daughter, telling her that a new team member for the Jarod Project has been sent by the Triumvirate. The team member turns out to be Mr. Lyle and, in truth, Mr. Parker pulled every string he could to get Mr. Lyle returned to The Centre.

To find out which of the two men is really her brother, Miss Parker manages to get a sample of Mr. Lyle's blood, then has a DNA fingerprint run on it in order to compare it to both her blood and Angelo's. When she takes what she thinks is the disappointing news that Lyle is her brother to her father, Mr. Parker shows no surprise. Miss Parker begins to suspect that Mr. Parker knew about Lyle all along
