Jarod "Burn" goes to Clear Bay, Pretending to be an arsonist. His intent is to set up a sting in order to exact revenge on Harold Kinkade, because the last time Kinkade hired an arsonist to torch one of his buildings, seven people died in the blaze. Shortly after Jarod arrives, however, the need to bring Harold Kinkade to justice goes up in smoke when Kinkade dies in a blaze that begins in his own bedroom.

Jarod is drawn to Kinkade's seemingly distraught widow, Kristi, until he realizes that she is only using him as a patsy to cover up the fact that she was in league with the local sheriff to kill her husband and gain control of his multi-million dollar estate. When Kristi tries to kill her partner-in-crime, along with Jarod, the sheriff confesses his part and implicates Kristi in the entire scheme. They both go to jail.

Lyle nearly convinces Miss Parker that he is truly sorry for never having had the opportunity to know their mother, Catherine, and that he's trying to put his sordid past behind him in order to begin anew. However, Jarod provides Miss Parker with enough information to discover that Lyle married a Chinese "mail order" bride named Che Ling in Las Vegas, then had the marriage expunged from the records after the girl was beaten to death.

Before she can impart this information to her father, Miss Parker learns that Mr. Parker helped Lyle cover up the marriage after Lyle "bared his soul" to him about his past on the pretext of turning over a new leaf.
