Jarod "Miner" infiltrates the ATF's Rapid Response Extraction Team in order to free Sydney's son, who has been taken hostage by the Appalachia Freedom Militia (AFM). Lyle learns about the situation when he intercepts an e-mail that Sydney has sent to Jarod asking for his help. Using Centre contacts to find the hostages before the ATF team can, Lyle is able to use Sydney's son, Nicholas, as bait in an attempt to capture Jarod. Lyle's moment of triumph is short-lived, however, when Jarod deduces what he's trying to do and thwarts the plan. In the end, Jarod turns the tables, making Lyle believe that he intends to kill him to avenge his brother's death at Lyle's hands.
During the crisis with his son, Miss Parker provides Sydney with the same kind of emotional support that he has always given to her. Sydney gives his father's Belgian Infantry compass to Nicholas. He tells Nicholas that his grandfather used it to keep from losing his way. Sydney also uses the compass to tell Nicholas a little about the family that he never knew he had. Michelle tells Sydney that Nicholas had a ventricular disorder as an infant and that it required him to have open heart surgery. Sydney determines to never again stand by while someone about whom he cares is hurt or in danger and joins Jarod in the effort to bring Nicholas safely home.
