Jarod plays the part of a white knight in order to help Rachel, a CIA analyst whose two children have been kidnapped. As the man behind half a dozen political assassinations, Rachel's former boss, Alex Renfro, has faked his own death to evade an FBI manhunt. Back from the dead, he tries to use Rachel's children as leverage to force her to commit a political assassination. Jarod and Rachel forge a bond over the fact that they have both created simulations that ended up being used to kill innocent people. Jarod gets a tape of Renfro, which he offers to trade for the return of Rachel's children. Renfro plans on killing Jarod, Rachel and her children after gaining possession of the tape, but Jarod is one step ahead of him and has already called the FBI. Moments after the exchange, they close in and capture Renfro.

Jarod learns to "bluff" by playing poker. Mr. Parker and Brigitte send out their wedding invitations. Broots has a date with Charlene Reynolds, a woman from the accounting department at The Centre. While trying to make peace between Miss Parker and Brigitte, Lyle admits to having slept with Brigitte. Miss Parker meets Thomas Gates, a carpenter who is restoring a home near hers. She is beginning to like "Tommy," but is cautious until Brigitte interferes, saying that Miss Parker must not see Gates again until he has been investigated completely by The Centre. Prompted by a midnight telephone call from Jarod telling her to "follow her heart" and not let The Centre take away her happiness, Miss Parker defiantly throws out (unread) the background check that she, herself, had already ordered on Thomas Gates. She hurries off to meet him for a romantic evening stargazing from atop a hill.
